It's very rare that even with lots of research your first trailer will meet your needs/desires for very long. My advice is buy used, cheap and use it while you make your own decision as to what you WISH your trailer had. Everything including room, features, layout etc are best determined by you from your own experience. I'm betting that the AVERAGE length of time the "first trailer" is suitable is extremely low and most will be looking to upgrade in about a year.
Couple of GENERAL tips to consider. HOW you intend to use the trailer should have a large impact on which trailer you ultimately end up with. For example, if you intend on going to the back country for camping then you need to be sure the entry door(s) are located close to the trailers axle. If you have a rear door like mine (located only three feet from the rear of the trailer) then it takes a LOT of ground clearance to avoid tail dragging (steps hang down and can't really be raised much) Unlike simply dragging the tail which doesn't harm anything, dragging the steps is easily a damage issue. Those are the kind of things you'll be thinking about AFTER using a trailer for a while.
