Hopefully not a full size truck as it would be used all the time when not pulling the trailer.
There is a reason why some people call full sized half ton pickups grocery getters. They are available with every creature comfort and luxury that any other vehicle offers in a similar price range. In fact, they are cheaper to purchase than mid-sized crossovers with the same equipment.
Anyway, 4000 pounds 23' sounds like a dry weight. That will grow to closer to 5000 pounds with 600+ pounds of tongue weight. While many crossovers have 5000ish pounds of tow rating, their ability to handle the tongue weight and pull two sheets of plywood through the air at 65mph provides uncomfortable towing experiences.
My opinion is to skip anything with a naturally aspirated V6. That means no Traverse, Pathfinder, Highlander, etc. Ford Explorer Sport or Flex Limited with 3.5L Ecoboost would be good, but limited on payload and tongue weight. Jeep Grand Cherokee Hemi or Ecodiesel and Dodge Durango Hemi would do great. What is your aversion to diesel for around tow driving?
