How much towing are you going to be doing? Occasional use, a V6 might do, cross country trips would need a little diesel, turbo gas engine, or a V8 truck.
I'd suggest you look at the Ram 1500 Ecodisel with 4 corner air suspension.
NY to FL and back one a year and in the summer short trips around NY so maybe a V8 truck would be needed? I don't want to over-buy but I also want something that will be secure - my husband is hesitant about pulling/handling anything which is why we had the C class. But that's just another engine to deal with and since he won't tow a car we have to rent.
A lot of the mid-sized SUVs *can* tow, but in a lot of cases, it is more of an afterthought.
Especially if you are new to towing or aren't particularly comfortable with it, and are going to tow a few miles, I would buy something meant to do it. Meaning, a 1/2 ton vehicle (SUV or truck). They have integrated trailer brakes, built in trailer sway control programming, tow/haul modes for the transmission and plenty of payload and capacity. To my knowledge, many of the mid-sized SUVs that have been suggested don't have these features. They aren't necessary, of course, but make towing a little easier and less of a hassle, especially if it is something you're worried about to begin with.
And all of the brands make a 1/2 ton truck that is plenty comfortable, drive smoothly, and are great for every day use. Similarly, Ford and GM make full sized SUVs like the Expedition and Tahoe that are extremely comfortable and were engineered with towing in mind (as well as creature comforts). If you haven't looked at one lately, I'd check 'em out.
