Diesel prices in the last 5 years have been very steady across the nation. In my area, $3.70-4.20. Gasoline has fluctuated from $2.90-$4.20. Each region/state is different.
I have a diesel mid-sized sedan with 42k miles. I also drove a 2011 mid-sized sedan with 4-cly gas engine for about 12k miles. I averaged 23mpg in the gas car and my lifetime average is about 38mpg for the same driving conditions. Same commute and around town trips. And I hated driving the gas car because it always felt underpowered and in the wrong transmission gear. So even with diesel costing more on average, it was still less than its competitor.
Take a look at what real owners are getting in the Grand Cherokee. 25-28mpg depending for diesel vs. 15-18 for the Hemi. That still means diesel will cost less per miles driven. And you get the other benefit of longer tank range.
OK, that doesn't matter much if you are looking at 5 year old vehicles. There were some 2007-8 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRDs but they are rare. Durango Hemi might be your best bet for mid-sized SUV.
