Help me choose a generator

I want a generator mainly to charge my battery while perhaps using a couple of lights and intermittently using the water pump. I don't expect it to power any "heavy hitters" like the micorwave, water heater, or AC.

Would the Honda EU100i be sufficient for this? I know the EU2000i would do the job, but I'd like to go with the lighter, cheaper EU1000i if it will get the job done.

I'de appreciate opinions from anyone using either of these models, especially if you use the EU1000i.
  • Saw a Huyndai 2000watt gen at wally world today. 650$ i think. Claimed 65db. Maybe a more cost effective option.
  • I had the exact same question a few weeks ago and decided on the 2000 Honda due to the slight higher cost and weight. I believe it was the right choice as it does add the extra flexibility. Love it so far! I don't believe you can go wrong with either unit.
  • I used a Honda 1000 for many years to do what you have described.

I know have 2 Honda 2000i with parallel kit. The 2000i allows you to do much more.

I see them on Craigslist and in The RV Forum classifieds often. You may be able to pick up a good used one for same or less than a new 1000.
  • I opted for the 2000i over the 1000i. For the incrimental increase in cost it's a more versatile generator that can run everything except the A/C (DW and DD must have their hair dryers!) And on more than one occasion it's powered my house during power failures.

Many of our favorite campsites are shaded so unless I make movable panels with 100' of cable solar doesn't work for us.
  • Honda 1000 will drive about 40 amps into the battery. What converter or charging system do you have?

You could have a very nice solar set up for less than the Honda.
  • Lights and water pump all run off battery. So basically you only want a battery charger, get the honda 1000 or Yamaha and go camping happy.
  • Have a Yamaha 2000 and love it. Yamaha has fuel shut off and fuel gauge. Very quiet. Comes with cables to charge batteries
  • Not that much difference in cost and weight between the Honda 1000 - 2000. The 2000 will give you far more options and represents the better value (IMHO). :C
