Help me figure out how to remove the furnace on my Pop Up

I'm having a problem with the furnace on my Pop Up. The switch with the small paddle on it doesn't always move properly when the fan comes on, which doesn't allow the gas to come on. If I take the cover off the furnace and move the switch back and forth to free it up then sometimes the furnace will come on, but obviously this is not a permanent solution. Today the weather is really nice here so I'm spending some time on the camper fixing a few things, and I'm trying to remove the furnace so I can get to this switch. However I'm pretty sure the cover on the outside of the camper is keeping the furnace from sliding out of the cabinet, there are two screws that look like they need to be removed but there is no way to get a screwdriver or even a small bit to them. Look at the attached pictures. Am I just missing something here?

And because I know some will probably say never work on a furnace yourself, take it to a pro etc, I'm an appliance repair tech for a living, I work on gas appliances like this all the time so I have no problems fixing the furnace myself, I just want to find out if there is an easier way to get this outer cover off.

Thanks!

  • Finally, ,

A posting with a problem, AND A FOLLOW-UP FROM THE OP TO ALL PARTICIPANTING RESPONDERS WITH THE FINDINGS & OUTCOME

Now I know that I was incorrect with my thinking & if ever faced with the same situation.
The screws have nothing to do with the removal of the furnace.

    Thank you, very much.
  • Well it turns out I didn't have to remove those screws after all to get the furnace out, it was just really stuck but I finally got it out. It was a good thing too because there were wasps nests and all kinds of junk in it. The sail switch had a ton of dust and gunk on it, I cleaned everything really good, put it back in and it seems to be working good now. Thanks again.

A small pair of vise grips. Go on the "inside" & loosen the screens. Yes, you will probably damage the screens, but they can be replaced. Otherwise, if you can, an offset screw driver may work.

Thats what I thought but wasn't sure if there was a better way. I tried the offset driver and it won't even fit.

BTW what do you mean by screen? Do some have a screen over the hole to keep things out? Mine doesn't.

I will certainly be replacing these with hex head stainless screws.

Typo has been corrected. what my fingers type & my mind thinks, often are two different things.:B

  • The "switch" you are talking about is the sail switch. They sometimes stick. Can you lube it without removing the furnace? If you can get it to move it, you should be able to get some lube on it and save yourself a lot of work???

From your picture, I'm not sure what you are having trouble with in trying to remove the entire unit. I'm trying to help, but as usual, I'm a little confused.
