I think that type of fitting has a soft cone shaped gasket so you don't have to tighten it too tight. The gasket has to squeeze the brass to prevent a leak. Adding teflon may crack the fitting.
The new pump fitting may not be the exact shape that the old pump had formed in the gasket or it may have fallen out when you weren't looking.
Check a similar fitting to see if it is the type that need the gasket.
