- whazooExplorerExcept under the bridge over the Salt River east of Roosevelt. She sure is a nice unit though. Heck, it would probably just go through the river and up the other side, heck with the bridge.
- PhotomikeExplorer IIIUNIMOG NOT NEED NO BRIDGE!!!!!
- _DJ_1Explorer IIYou're gonna need a chainsaw!!!!
- sabconsultingExplorerVery impressive, and the pop-up looks good on it. I've seen a lot of these Unimog and similar 4x4 commercial trucks in Germany with camper bodies, but most of them are a box body rather than a pop-up like this, but I like the pop-up to keep the total height down (a bit).
I'm not sure I'd have the guts to spend the sort of money we are talking about for a new Unimog like that AND take it into the third world (where it is designed to go as a camper). Maybe an older version of the same thing though.
Steve. - btggraphixExplorerThat's one of those U500's, right? Wow - yes, I lost quite a lot of drool looking at those! But the nice thing is realizing what I already have works so well for us (and same for so many of the others from our group) and all most of us really wish for is more TIME to get out and enjoy using them.
- SheriffdougExplorerMello Mike, Whazoo, DJ, Sabaconsulting, btggraphix & DJ, you all have perfect rigs.
Unimog, just too big, oversized, awkward, too high, etc.
I had n Australian vehicle called an OKA. www.okakalgoorlie.com.au
It had seating for nine in total comfort, three rows of coach seats, with an 8 x 6 ft rear tray.
It's wheels tracked 10-12 inches wider than a conventional 4WD and had a a 1000lb weight Bull
Bar at the front . But for four wheel driving, you had to make your own tracks, as wheels were over
Track size. So you find your self skating awkwardly at speed, on gravel or sand tracks. It had an eight ton PTO winch and a small crane/Hiab in the rear tray.
It would knock down small trees, then you look in rear mirror and they popup again.
In tall grass, and on any road, you were much higher.
Had a lot of fun, but not practical. Amazing vehicle! - mooring_productExplorerHeight has been my issue so I cant imagine running around in a unimog.
Chainsaw would be a must for sure. - AimlessWanderLuExplorerBut how tall is it really? Let's assume that guy is about 6 foot, then with the top popped down, it looks like maybe 12 feet total? How much shorter are all the hard side truck campers mounted on full size trucks?? I'd say at best they are around 11 feet...

I carry a Stihl MS361, 3' limb clippers, a bowsaw, and an EstWing long handled hatchet (plus mixed gas, bar oil etc.) One storage box is entirely commited to this gear. I have never had to use the Stihl except for firewood, but I can sure as heell get back out even if a large tree goes down. I have several times had my wife ride on the roof, and clip or lift branches out of the way on backwoods USFS roads or getting into a campsite; she speaks into the mic of the camera to tell me to "stop" "wait" etc. I usually listen ;) Remarkably, being so short (length) I have often been able to weave my way from side to side to avoid limbs without having to do any surgery. I've driven down a USFS road on a busy weekend seeing the litter from other campers' roofs including fridge vents and vent covers while I weave my way along without danmaging anything (they were from some long 5'ers that I met later....they simply couldn't weave at all because of their length.) But I do come prepared.
I would think most height issues in a Unimog, can be solved by simply pushing right into whatever is in the way...at least the ones that have some rub bars external to the body. For us height hasn't been too much of an issue and we camp......we camp a lot, and mostly off in the Sticks. - btggraphixExplorer

You are right - the height of that U500 with a pop-up is about the same as a relatively short hard-sided camper on a normal truck.
