You owning a 4WD truck which is never needed"
Oh, come ON, 45, if you had been paying attention you would know that I have almost always had a 4X4 of some kind, even though my hauler was a 4X2 Ram 3500 dually. There is a big difference between "need" and "want", as has been pointed out many times by many people.
Many thanks to those who verified my thoughts about the noise. I suspected the front hub bearings, having encountered a similar noise in the front end of an AMC Eagle. Now to find somebody to change the front hubs and u-joints for a reasonable price. At 70+, with arthritic hands, I don't want to mess with it, and I don't need the three days of pain that will result from doing that kind of job!
For those who asked, 182K, and yes, the noise changes with an abrupt left turn but not so much with a right turn. I got the truck for less than half of KBB retail price. No service records.
I figure if it is going to get done, I might as well do both sides, AND the axle u-joints. Do it all now, and be done with it!
