I bought a 14" hitch extender today as I was in a tight spot a couple of weeks ago and almost took out a tail light:) Turns out....the extender REDUCES tongue and tow weight by 50%. Makes sense...

That sounds more like a weight distribution rating, not a weight carrying rating. Your RAM's hitch receiver is WD rated that high? :@
My RAM has a ClassIV hitch.
Class IV hitches used as weight carrying are rated up to 10,000 lbs. gross trailer weight (GTW) with a maximum trailer tongue weight (TW) of 1000 lbs.
