I tow about 13k with one of those new diesel engins in a 2014 ram 3500 dually. Not broken in yet I am getting 16mpg not towing and 12.5 to 13mpg towing.
Hauled it with a 2005 chev duramax 2500, was chiped and had airbags in it. The thing hauled like a champ, cannot really coment on the fuel milage not knowing the size of the tank but it seemed a bit hard on fuel going by the gauge. It was the dealers rig and I used it while my hitch was being installed.
Towed much smaller 8000pds with a 5.7 1500, I cannot see the 2500 series trucks being better on fuel. I got 15.5 not towing and a whopping 8.7 to 8.9 towing. Truck was a 2011. Now the 2500 does not have the Eco mode that switches between 4 and 8 cylinders so everyday milage may be less.
New, not sure if you would save 9k in fuel, depends on how much you tow but I think in the long run you would get your money back on the resale and have the fuel savings as a bonus. Where I am at a 2005 chev diesel will go between 12k to 16k depending on milage. A gas will get you 5k to 9k. It would take you about 35000 miles of towing to get your money back on fuel alone.
Either gas or disel in the 2500 will get the job done for you. There are guys I know who swear their 1500 5.3 is getting 12s towing 10k no problem but that was not my experiance.
