a 2500 gasser will get the job done, but it isnt going to happen at 10mpg imo. After having a Hemi 5.7 (albeit in a 1500), and now a Cummins in my 2014 Ram (3500 SRW), there is just no comparison in the smoothness, torque, and mpg...only you can decide if the extra cost is worth it to you, but finding a lightly used diesel under $30k is going to be tough...can be found all day long with a gasser though..that should tell you something about resale value down the road also...good luck!
