Get a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel. I only tow a 7500 lb TT, but recently bought a clean one owner 2004.5 Ram diesel, my first diesel. The towing experience is so easy and pleasant compared to my experiences towing with a gasser, that I would never buy anything but a diesel for towing. Plus I have plenty of head room in capacity to move to a heavier TT or to a Fifth Wheel, should I desire to.
Honestly, when shopping trucks, I did not rule out a HD gasser, but the clean ones were priced almost as high as what I paid for the clean diesel truck. And as others have said, I will still have good resale when the time comes. With the gasser -- not so much.
I get 10.5 to 11 mpg towing, hand calculated. I get that mileage, even climbing up and down steep grades. Others who are giving mileage figures should disclose if they are hand calculating their mileage or believing the onboard lie-o-meter.
