I am getting the feeling that gas is the way to go despite the lower mileage. If I work on fuel prices going up to $4.50 a gallon, then with my annual 6000 mile trip the dif between 8.5 mpg & 12.5 is $1000. Assuming a diesel costs 10K more than that, its 10 years to break even and with lower maintenance costs in the interim. I do not use my truck as a daily driver at all.
I respect your decision making process. I took note that you're dropping to 3/4 ton which should still have the payload capacity you need. If you're buying used you may also benefit from a lower resale value compared to Diesel.
The biggest culture shock in a switch to gas may be learning to trust running the truck at RPMs that put it in the sweet part of the torque curve. I shared that in a couple of PMs I've received lately asking about my TV. I used to bounce my 4-bangers off the rev limiter, so spending 30 minutes locked in a lower gear at 3,600 RPM is just fine if I'm dealing with a climb.
