I've driven the Durango and really like it for day to day use. It's not as huge, it drives very well, it's quiet. It has reasonable though not great reliability ratings. My wife would also drive it for the soccer carpool etc., whereas she will not drive a full length SUV or a truck. I'd have to get her another vehicle, like an SUV or minivan, as well as the truck. Right now we only have a Prius and a 10 year old RAV, so we can't carry more than 5 people.
Thanks for explaining the tow rating and how a boat will apply less tongue and hitch weight than an RV.
I have found several 5000 lb TTs I'd be happy with, so I know that's safe. I wouldn't actually get a 7000 lb TT with an SUV. I might try to get to 6000 lb if safe.
The other problem with getting a truck goes like this. Right now we only need a half ton, for a TT. Fine. But then I think, well if I'm going to get a truck, why not get a 3/4 ton so I can get a real trailer or a 5th wheel? And then I think, well if I'm going to get a 3/4 ton, why not a HD full ton so I can get a truck camper someday? And then I get paralyzed.
Maybe I should just get a used minivan for her, a used half ton for me, start with a TT around 7000 lb, and give it a go for a few years. I know of good quality TTs with 1 slide in that weight range, and that would meet all of our needs, I think.
