OP, what's your towing speed? Terrain? RPM for climbs? Also, I'm guessing it's a 5.3 not 5.7 (if you do have a stroker kit then that explains it).
Gassers consume a lot more fuel than diesels at high loads, because 1) you're forced to run a rich A/F mixture for cooling, especially gas turbos, and 2) you rely more on RPM, which increases pumping and friction losses.
The trick is to go SLOW (55 max), and keeps revs as low as the computer allows, while keeping the converter locked. Large throttle position and low revs - best economy due to low friction.
Pickuptrucks.com got 12 mpg towing 7500 lbs (IIRC), but that's a flatbed with artificial weights. A TT has a lot more drag, and since HP required increases to the cubic of speed, keep the speeds down!
