I tow with an F-250 6.8L & 4.10 rear gear and a 9k trailer loaded. 8.5-9 mpg is about normal all on flat ground down here. Your experience is normal and you will be hard pressed to lower the per cost mile with a diesel option due to high initial cost and higher fuel cost. I have found certain speeds with my vehicle yield better mileage and try to stick to it.
