Hot air out the side
Hi I was just wondering if the hot exhaust from the furnace was just wasted heat or is it just stale exhaust? It sure seems to be a lot of heat coming out of there!

That's how they provided cabin heat on the old VW's with air cooled engines....since no coolant meant no radiator or heater core.
Instead VW used an air-to-air heat exchanger where outside air was run through a jacket around the exhaust manifold and warmed before being blown inside as heat. Rust was always an issue, and when you could smell exhaust inside the car it was time to replace the heat exchanger.
