I remember gasoline heaters as an accessory for the VW, maybe an extra cost option on some models, that northern dealers would usually order. In Michigan, we were still getting heat from the exhaust manifold on VWs into the early 1960s.
Gasoline heaters were the "standard" technology for the rear engine air cooled Corvair. Standard in quotes because in 1960 the heater/defroster was still optional equipment on some low-cost car and truck models in the U.S.
