How do I know if my trailer coupler is adjusted correctly?

For about a year I had a very hard time getting the coupler to open or close over the ball. Then I learned these couplers are adjustable. I loosened mine a little and now it opens and closes (and lock...

I always run my ball and coupler dry.

I had one trailer that sometimes did not want to drop on the ball even when you bounced up and down on the tongue. A little forward and back jiggle did the trick.
