how do I properly weigh my rig?

My one and only trip to the CAT scale cost me $12.50 for two passes. I parked and went in to talk to the person at the counter to let them know what I was doing and that I was new to CAT. For your money you get two computer printouts of your weights.
First pass was with my trailer hooked up. Truck front end on the front scale, back tires on the middle scale, and the trailer tires on the last scale. You get weights from each scale.
Second pass I parked the trailer and went on the scales with only my truck.
In my case the truck's front axle weight was the same on both passes, which surprised me. I subtracted the 2nd pass rear axle truck weight from the 1st pass rear axle truck weight to get the trailer's pin weight (3500# in my case). I added the pin weight to the trailer's axle weight to get the total trailer weight.
The people at the scale are real good to work with.
