I think your owner's manual is going to be the final authority. It's based on what the manufacturer and their engineers find is safe and won 't cause damage leading to warranty issues. Actually, I would not tow the maximum allowed just to allow for error in estimating the weight of the load. Unless you actually weigh with the unit loaded as you would have it when traveling.
