How do you run your generator?

Where do you put them when you run them? We are staying in some state parks later this summer and I want to keep it as quiet as possible. I have a Champion 2000 watt inverter generator that is quiet but I am wondering about ways to get it even more quiet and keep it safe and dry. I thought about running it inside of my capped truck bed but it seems risky with the heat build up. Thoughts and pics welcome.

  • My first question is, "Why are you going to run your generator at all?" The only reason I carry one is for air conditioning and that is only at Walmart or some remote location where nobody can hear it running. Solar, batteries, and propane take care of the rest.
  • Although it is a nice gesture on your part, a better plan would be to just run your generator to maintain your battery in it's mid level. Your charging converter will put the maximum amount into the battery in the shortest time when the battery is just below mid range, and you charge it to just above mid range. Use inexpensive inverters to power chargers and TV's as much as possible.

For about three dollars I have a tiny voltmeter on my battery that shows me my battery voltage as I camp. I become aware of when I need to charge, and also I am aware of how many hours I need to replace what I am using.
  • I have a 20 amp inlet on the front of my trailer, so I run mine 2kw close to the road, on the other side of my truck. Usually there's no campsite directly across the road from me, and the truck blocks some of the noise from coming into my site.

If it's time to two in parallel for air conditioning, I need the 30 amp inlet on the back of the trailer, so the generators go there. I have a rear bath with it's own door, it really cuts down on the generator noise from the main living area of the coach.
