How does this work?

Super basic truck camper question.

When you're set up at a campsite, does the camper stay hooked to the truck the whole time? If you need to run an errand or go explore, do you bring the camper along? Do you ever disconnect and leave the camper at the site?

Very curious.

  • We always unload if more than a night or two.

  • I can't say I have ever seen a TC "unload" at any campground. Maybe if you were going to stay for a week or more.

TCs (that I know of) don't have a black water tank and some (most ? all?) have external gray water so about the only thing you have to disconnect is power and pack up any loose items before running on a side trip.
  • Thanks for all the info. My wife grew up cmaping in a truck camper, and therefore has no desire to revisit that option. LOL. I just think they're awesome, but I've never camped in one.
  • Ours stays on the truck. If we are a few hours from home and staying a week or more my wife follows me with our SUV. If it is a longer distance from home and we are staying for a week or more in one place them we just rent a car. If we are traveling we just use the truck and camper for everything.
  • I leave mine on the truck. There is no place I would take the truck that the camper wouldn't fit. I just make sure I won't lose my camp site first. I also make sure I have all the food I need before setting up for the day.
  • Either way you want. If I was going to be at a camp site for a while and wanted to run to the store or an attraction on several different days I'd take it off. Also, when going to a lake I would often take it off so I could launch and retrieve the boat without the camper on.
I had power jacks with a wireless remote so I could take it on and off fairly quickly. If I had manual jacks with hand cranks it would have been different.
Mostly I left it on and we just drove the combination around like a motorhome.
  • Either way works. I like having the TC with me most of the time, so I can do lunch, etc.

There have been reports of some campgrounds that don’t allow you to take the TC off. In that case, I guess you bring it with you or book somewhere else.
