My 06 F-150 has a 27 gallon tank so I consider 25 gallons gone as being on empty. The Scan Gauge does a good job of ensuring I won't run out as it monitors consumption precisely. We average 12.5 towing at 59 mph so 250+ miles per tank keeps us in our comfort zone. As noted above either we or the pooch will need to pee long before we go much farther than that and the new knee needs a stretch every couple of hours.
I carry a 6 gallon jug in the back of the truck (inside the Leer), on long trips on unfamiliar roads. It's more likely I'll end up sharing it with someone else who's stranded but it is nice to know I have it in reserve. :C
