How far can you tow prior to fill up?

Got one of the smaller tanks, 16 gallons in 65 Chevy Van. As we get 10+ mpg with a 292 6 cyl, I start to get nervous at 120 miles. My (almost) 50 year old gas gage doesn't work all that well, so I always keep track of the number of miles traveled.
When traveling on highways in Nevada where gas stations are long ways apart, I started carrying a 5 gallon can of gas just in case. Despite 70,000 miles towing all over the western USA, never have run out.
