How far can you tow prior to fill up?

I once had a 79 F-150 that only had a 15 gallon tank. But, that was years ago. It had a 400 CI engine, automatic, and full time 4 wheel drive too. (Boy did that thing ever get bad gas mileage) I used to carry a gas can in the back with a couple of gallons of gas in it because it was possible to get stranded between stations. lol But, like I said that was a long time ago.
