At first I'm thinking "OK, not so bad, he can tow this" but as I continue reading the weight keeps growing.
With me, my dog, a full tank of fuel, toolbox and 5th wheel hitch installed the truck weighed 7600lbs on the button...
Today I filled the trailer with water, but really nothing else and threw the ~80lb generator in the bed of the truck...
Realistically we'd be adding the lady, another dog, firewood, and loading the trailer with all the food and camping supplies you'd expect.
I'll also be planning to tandem tow my pair of jet ski's, that trailer is just shy of 2,700lbs with a ~400ish pound tongue weight that puts me at 69'4" (legal Nevada limit is 70').
Bad enough the truck is overweight with the RV but then add on another trailer behind the RV. Wow...
No worries here, I haven't actually done it, I'm simply collecting thoughts, opinions and data to make an intelligent decision.
As you can see it is portrayed in many ways, with some people saying simply to pay for a higher GVWR with the DMV, and while sure that may solve the legalities of the setup being on the road it doesn't make the truck magically more rated to tow.
I want to make the most informed decision I can, and as I gather more information I'm certainly leaning towards a newer 3500, but again don't want to spend $25k if it can be avoided. Not that I cant, but that I have a great truck in almost new condition and no reason to upgrade for anything other than safety (which I certainly do find important or I'd just be out there towing the moon and not here asking about it)
