My question is at what point do you consider 'over weight' to be 'too much over weight'. Is it 100lbs, 500lbs, 1,000lbs, 1,500lbs etc? Airbags make a huge difference, but they aren't changing the rest of the truck and while my tires and wheels are rated for the weight, that doesn't mean my axles, brakes, frame etc enjoy it.
Some points here.
Brakes are a function of the GAWR of the vehicle. A truck maker may choose any GVWR he wants up to the sum of the vehicles axle ratings.
GM uses the same AAM 11.5" in their 2500/3500 SRW and DRW trucks which has a 10xxx lb rating. Your not hurting the rear axle internals nor the trucks frame.
Over weight ??
Having made a living pulling heavy GN trailers with the same size trucks (one ton DRW) we all pull our RVs with I wouldn't put over 3500-3800 lb load on any 3/4 (higher rated tires/wheels and rear spring pack help) or one ton SRW trucks rear axle....and pull 15000 lb gross weight trailer.
