I thought the general rule of thumb was adding 1,000 pounds to the dry weight... why would it be 2,000? With it full of water and all our stuff we would never hit 2,000 pounds. Just curious so I can understand.
Safety margin. Junk expands to fill the space allotted to it. It is way to easy to load up, go somewhere, find you need some little thing, add it and one day discover you are suddenly way overweight. For some reason, everyone does this, so you might as well allow for it up front.
Don't forget, too, that it's the passengers and rubble they drag into the truck that's limiting you here, and every pound they add reduces the trailer payload by 6.7 lbs.
