mnmbeck, don't think your husband has a clear picture of 23'+ hybrids nor ones with slideouts.
we own a Roo 23SS, which has a 12' superslide and is 24'6" long.
we dry camp about 90% of the time, in California state parks which are notorious for having smaller and shorter campsites.
we have NEVER had an issue in secluded wooded campsites. we love all the interior storage space that the 23SS offers over any hybrid like the 20E or 21SS. though the 21SS's slideout is deeper than ours.
we even camped in the infamous tight/twisty Burlington campground, in Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
i would check the lengths of some of your favorite campsites are before you count out something a little bigger than 23'.
