I've always been more concerned with the impact on the gray tank than running out of hot water. With the elec. and gas on, we have never had a lack of hot water. And, ironically, it increases the time certain people like to stand in the shower which fills the gray tank faster.
If you manage your time and technique, you can take a very effective and pleasurable shower with very little water. When showering in the trailer rather than the campground shower house, I always apply the shampoo and gently massage it in without water. I then proceed to set the water temp. using the spent water that's too cold to soap the washcloth. Once I get in with the temp set, I turn off the water at the shower head so as not to upset the mix setting, and soap up all over. I then add a little water to my already soaped head and lather up. With the whole works all soaped up, I turn the shower head back on and do a final rinse from top to bottom. I've never measured it but I'm guessing I can take a good shower with about three gallons or less. It's clear the rest of the family isn't as efficient, but the average is probably less than 5 gal per member. Luckily, we use the available shower house more often so it's not much of an issue any way you slice it. If the gray tank fills up, that's what the blue tote is for.
