Directional stability is the argument for dual axles. Think about it: to deviate from straight-ahead, one of the axles has to be dragged sideways (actually, one has to crab left while the other crabs right, but the energy required is the same). This helps greatly with reducing sway. And bad as sway is with a 1500 lb trailer, it's much much worse the heavier the trailer is.
