How much can I tow?

2006 ram 2500 mega 4x4 cummins 5 ft bed.
The reason I ask is the previous owner added leaf springs in the rear end.
There is zero dip in her rear end and it rides unbelievably comfortable.

Your "tow limit" will almost ALWAYS be limited to the remaining payload after you load up people, hitch, firewood etc. If you are at gvwr before adding a trailer, in reality, you have NO ability to safely tow a trailer. Now if you have 1000 lbs, you have 10K lbs of trailer with 10% hitchweight, or 4000 lbs with 25% hw.

TO answer your question, who really knows, as it can vary!

As indicated there is never a real simple answer as it is a combination of TV limits that must be matched to the individual trailer

  • Start with MFR tow ratings. Then look at your driver's door for this sticker and note what it has where mine says 2051:

Are you interested in a 5th wheel or travel trailer?
  • Nothing you do will increase the tow rating. Adding springs, bags etc will make the ride more stable or comfortable but they don't change the original factory ratings.
  • It is by observation. In the rear are the leaf springs and attached and seperated by an inch or so are three additional leaf springs. Not sure on the axles.
So in addition to my original question. What can I tow before the addition and what can it tow now give or take and understanding the axle concern.
  • I have the same truck, but lifted. One thing to think about, is just because you add extra leaf springs or air bags, still does not change the rating of your axles. Your axle rating will always be the same regardless of what you do to the suspension. Just my $.02.

What makes you think he added springs in the rear? Did he tell you that or your observation?
