It started as a 454, but that's where it ends. it became an 8.1/ 496 CID engine and could "flat scat" ...Believe the reason it got canned was because mpg wasn't good at all..BUT, it was the only gasser that I'm aware of that was strapped to an Allison tranny with a 4;10....I used it to tow a 5er, (GVW of about 12,000# at the time), all through the mountains of NC, TN, SC, WV and Va and I never had an issue with it...other than even when empty was lucky to get 12 mpg and that was pushing it...Had a K&N air filter, dual's and a Grantelli MAF sensor to try to "eck" out more mpg...But it was an aniMULE:)
