Power wise the Ford 5.4 from 2001 was a gutless wonder, in I think 2004 they upped the HP which helped alot. It is a reliable engine though even if the one with low HP.
In general, I ere on having a larger engine for towing/hauling even if worse fuel economy. But that's just me.
