I've found that baking soda makes a great cleaner for appliances. Make a paste of the powder and spread it on, keeping it wet occasionally and adding more powder. If left to work for a few days, it should clean it up and the smell will be gone.
I used this method to clean the baked on grease and food spills in an oven that was 40 yrs. old and it cleaned it to a sparkle.
