How to tell trailer axle rating without placard?

This is for a boat trailer, but I figure someone would know the answer to this.

I am curious about the axle rating for my boat trailer, but the placard with all of the information is worn off. I took some pictures of the axle and leaf springs in hope that this may help.

The trailer is 17ft long and 5ft wide. I'm just trying to get an idea as I am going to convert this trailer to a utility trailer then move this boat to a smaller trailer. Thanks for any help!

Oh, and don't worry about that dangling wire...:B

  • Thanks everyone for your input! I was assuming it was a bit lighter than I thought as it is not a solid round axle.
  • Check Shore Lander site and you will identify it rather quickly. The axle is not a tube but aq upside down u shape with stubs welded into it.I would be amazed if it was rated to carry more then 2000lbs.I have one under my 1400 Lund Fury that is rated at 1400 lbs.and it looks identical.
  • With the 5 bolt rims my guess is a 3500lb,the spring looks right for that. If the tire is a 205 and or more C rated tire then it likely is 3500lb.
  • You might try going (with the pictures) to a boat shop, and see what they have that is similar. You may not get an number that is exactly correct for your trailer, but it should be close.

I have a 4x8 utility trailer, and it's only got a single leaf, and I can get a lot of stuff in it.....so unless you plan on loading 50 sheets of plywood or several hundred concrete blocks, you should be fine with a smaller utility trailer on that axle.

You probably should also calculate the weight that the tires can handle...which may be less than the axle is rated for. That would be your max. weight limit anyway.

Still, you may get a better answer from someone who has a similar boat trailer...sorry, I don't.
