Another reason to shut it off is if you are trying to run your a/c and your generator doesn't have quite enough to support the a/c and the charger at the same time. This was my original reason for turning it off. I now turn it off and usually leave it off because my solar charge controller charges the batteries so don't need the converter charging them.
