If using a ladder like this, you need to have a steep angle so that you aren't pressing very much against the cap because they aren't very strong and you don't want to damage it. A helper holding on to the ladder would be a good idea.
I do something similar with either a 6 or 8' step ladder unopened with a heavy blanket draped over the top and then lay the ladder against the front so I can get closer to the middle to wax/wash it.
