I have a diesel, and really like it. And I am sure that the CTD will do a better job with 8000 pounds. But the weight you are asking about will be very comfortably towed by the 6.4. Yes, it will downshift more often, and yes it will get worse MPG pulling, but the 6.4 is more than adequate for what you are suggesting.
