I've found that wind area matters more than weight. I can pull 12k pounds on my car trailer and the boost gauge stays lower (except on steep hills) than pulling my 9k lb 5er.
A gas V8 powered truck with 4.10 gears will pull 8,000 pounds all day long and faster than you can stop it. 20 years ago we were doing that with 200 horsepower and now you have 400+ on tap. Gasoline is never going to pull like diesel, but it'll do the job.
