Wasn’t trying to turn this into an ED thread. As said to tow that weight TT with the half ton platform requires proper setup and is IMO at the practical max. Mine only struggles with that much weight at highway speed up a long grade but it has a tune, 3.92s & 275/55/20s. Likely in one day you didn’t take the time to dial the rig in.
With basic conservative what I call a tow tune it makes more torque than the 6.4. Main point being the 8 speed will hold up under that kind of load and will be for the many reasons listed a substantial improvement over the current transmission.
My ED had the 20 inch wheels and the 3.92 gears as well. I never planned on or intended to tune it though. Not sure how much difference it would have made. The engine seemed to be screaming when towing my TT. Gas mileage was only about 8mpg albeit I only towed it once. It was sagging a lot in the rear and the ride was pretty squirrely. Yes, I could have dialed in the WDH a little better and upgraded to E rated tires. Can it tow that much? Maybe, but I weighed it and I was overweight on payload with 1/2 a tank of diesel, no one else in the truck, or any gear. I didn't bother to calculate any other numbers. It wasn't an easy decision, because I absolutely loved the truck, but towing my TT with the hemi now is like night and day.
