No, that demonstrates leverage by hooking high and traction.
Yep, it doesn't seem like a fair fight. The harder the JD pulls, it generates less traction.
The harder the Steamer pulls, the more traction it generates.
I think the connection between them should be level.
At least that is how it appears to me. - 2003silveradoExplorer II99% of the time a tug of war goes to the guy with the best traction. That steam engine likely weighs 3 times the that of the Deere, and as pointed out the connection points aren't equal.
- Torque vs HP is similar to comparing voltage and wattage.
Without RPM and amps the three legged comparison just falls over. - lawnspecialtiesExplorerIf I'm not mistaken, the reason I love a diesel when pulling heavy loads is because when its time to accelerate on the highway, the engine just smoothly and steadily speeds up the vehicle with rarely a downshift. When I was using my former F350 and the 6.2L gasser, when it was time to accelerate, to achieve the same goal meant it downshifted several gears and screamed high RPMs to accomplish the feat.
Both got me to the goal of increased speed but in a different manner. I love the torque of a diesel. - Dennis_M_MExplorerIn the sports car racing world the explanation is:
horsepower determines how FAST you hit the wall,
torque determines how HARD you hit the wall! - 4x4ordExplorer IIII like to think of torque as the amount of fuel an engine can burn per revolution.
Horsepower is the amount of fuel an engine can burn per unit of time. - boshogExplorerTorque is the amount of twist that is applied, horsepower is how fast the torque is applied.
- Turtle_n_PeepsExplorerThat demonstrates neither.
As Trans said, this whole video demonstrates traction. Hook the steamer to a 4' tree stump and try to pull it out of the ground. Does the tree stump have more torque by not going anywhere? No, it has more traction to stay put and be anchored into the ground.
Talk to any puller or drag racer and the holy grail is traction and with the weight of the steamer, it had a LOT of traction.
Look at the 5 minute mark. You think the pickup wins because he has more torque? No, he wins because he has more traction.
Horses, with their small foot print have a lot of traction too!
