Tough call especially when you don't know the history. Are you planning some shorter shake down trips before you game ad out 500 miles?
If you don't want a payment, spend a few grand on this truck addressing known problem areas.
IMO the newer vehicles are all pretty reliable mechanically. But it would suck to be broke. Down far from home on a family vacation. But as Jeremiah said, that can happen on something brand new as well. The only difference is warranty pays instead of you. But you are still stuck.
Personally I spend quite a bit of money to have new or newer toys. When I have time off I want to use it, not have a higher likelihood of having a breakdown.
