Not necessarily.
My co worker Garry L. has an F-150 3 valve 5.4L that he bought nearly new. He has had it for several years and he, being a Certified Caterpillar Tech, has done all of his own work. This truck has never towed anything and has only hauled a 4 wheeler in hunting season.
At 95k miles it developed the "tick" which he ignored, and a few weeks later it dropped a valve.
I don't know how your nuisance "tick" differs from his catastrophic "tick", but he followed that same line of reasoning and it cost him an engine.
He is of the opinion that the 2v 5.4L in his previous 1999 F-150 is a more durable engine.
I am of the opinion that if anything changes in your vehicle it should be checked out.
JMHO of course
