Now have 163k on the Suburban, just towed the TT down to Florida and back a few weeks ago. I've put some money into it the last couple years with rebuilt transmission, new fuel/brake lines, radiator, etc etc, but it still drives great and I have read that the 8.1 has a design life of 250k miles.
As was noted, any vehicle can break down on the road. Back when the truck was still under warranty, the a/c compressor grenaded on a trip to VA Beach in August. Spent the week driving the family around in a rented Matrix while the dealer fixed the truck. Our 25th anniversary trip to Asheville, we spent a day in the dealership waiting room getting the crank sensor replaced.
I was under the hood installing a new alternator at our campsite this past trip....I could tell by the voltage gauge that it wasn't charging right, so off to the local Advance Auto....
Best thing is to have road service...we use Good Sam ERS because they will tow the trailer to a CG if we break down. Not saying you should go with them, there are others to choose from, but gives us peace of mind when traveling not having to worry about the truck. Guaranteed if you travel with the time sert kit and some spare plugs, the serp belt will break....it's not possible to travel with enough tools and replacement parts to cover every possible contingency.
