I contacted the detective and he checked the records with my truck. He said that I should be safe. The reason is that I should be safe is because the dealer may had signed the owner's title by forgery. If the owner comes forward, then my truck could be impounded. He also said that since I have the title and it is registered and I did everything right on my end, I will never be arrested or prosecuted. The worse thing it could happen is my truck will get impounded if the title was forged.
With this new info, I would sell or trade it for something else. You presently are the legal owner... But if it is proven that the previous title was forged, then you may not be the legal owner in the future.
Just like my high school buddy that I wrote about earlier. When he got his camaro back, it had changed hands several times between being stolen from him and when he got it back... The last guy to own it is the one that takes the loss.
Be safe. Treat it like a hot potato.
To ease the conscience, trade it off at a big reputable dealer. IF it should end up going back to the original owner, then the new dealer will have the resources (insurance) to make it right and pursue the orginal dealer for compensation..
There is always the possibility that nothing will happen.... But it is a big risk
