How about the transmission- both Nissan and Ram HD offer an Aisin.
Certainly Ram was offered this 1/2 ton (Cummins/Aisin) combo first and decided to pass on it-
My guess is that the economics of "buying" in house made more sense than going outside. Perhaps the cost of going outside was too expensive for them to be able to sell many trucks or perhaps they got greedy and could make an extra few dollars staying inside. Perhaps the MPG was what they were after- which at todays oil price is far less of an issue.
Given the choice I would absolutely buy the Nissan (Cummins/Aisin) over the Ram (Fiat/Motori) offering. Nissan makes good vehicles and with a Cummins/Aisin- it's a no brainer! The thing is gonna be a 1/2 ton brute built for the long haul!
