The 14 bolts are on the cover, not the ring gear for the original 14 bolt. The Corporate 14 bolt ring gear is held on with 12 bolts. The 9.5" rear, 9.25" front, and 11.5" are have 12 on the gear and 14 on the cover.
The AAM 10.5" used behind the Hemi also has a 14 bolt axle cover.
The 11.5 is called a 14 bolt in some of the OE catalogs (just like the 9.25" front, or 9.5" rear), but this is the first place I have ever heard someone reference it as a 14 bolt, but that could just be who/where I have talked about it. Thou ask most anyone about a 14 Bolt FF axle and they will talk about the Corporate 14 bolt, not the SF or "AAM" versions (thou they are all AAM).
It seems that AAM likes 14 bolts on the cover and 12 bolts on the ring gear for their HD pickup axles.
